About Us

The history of Muar oysters has been recorded in various writings since 1858. According to records, oysters are found in Kesang of which Kesang was part of the Muar district at that time. The area is described as an area seldom visited by Europeans, very beautiful and capable of advancing agriculture in any degree (J.R. Logan, 1858). Muar oysters are famous because they are a special dish for Sultans and dignitaries. As recorded, that the Singapore oyster market has received its main supply from Muar (R. Hanitsch, 1908).

Time goes by and the oyster population is shrinking due to development and pollution. The remnants for future generations are only available at the mouth of the Muar River now. Here, fishermen pick oysters traditionally. It is very interesting because oysters are collected from the riverbed at a depth of 15 to 20 feet during low tide without diving equipment, and this is what has attracted the author to start various observation, reading and collaboration activities promoting oysters found in the Muar River.

Above is the observation made by Saidi Mohamed. In fact, this oyster species is named after him. He promotes oysters by holding various activities such as collaborating with Universiti Putra Malaysia and so on. At this university, he met a scientist - Dr Nur Leena Wong Wai Sin, who was an expert in mollusk culture which led him to the discovery of this new  oyster species.

Due to his dedication, commitment, passion and discovery of new species of oysters in Sungai Muar, this new species of oysters was named after him.

Hopefully, the discovery of this new species of oyster will be a trigger to open the eyes of various parties in order to conserve its habitat while making it a new source of income.

Way forward, he is focusing on oyster products within Peninsular Malaysia.
